Fruits Of Passion (1981)Here’s a film that’s alittledifferentfrom Anchor Bay’s usual fare of obscure horror andaction films. Klaus Kinskistars as Sir Stephen in ’Fruits of Passion’,which isalso known as ’The Story of O Continued’. The filmconcerns O (Isabelle Illiers) going to China andbecoming aslave at abrothel. She and Sir Stephen feel that ifshe canpleasure many men, thatshe willlove Sir Stephenevenmore. (What?!) In the meantime, Sir Stephen is seeing another woman (played by Arielle Dombasle) and they talk of returning to France without O. O issubjected to many cruelties in thebrothel, but comesto befriend some of the other employees. Will Obecomestrong enough to leave Sir Stephen andhisunique ways? ’Fruits of Passion’ is many things, but it’s never dull. The filmoffers agreat deal of melodrama inits situations andperformances. Also, itoffers manyscenes of bizarresexuality. The film was shot inwhat appearsto be Hong Kong (but it’s in French, go figure), and shows many ofthe city’slocations. Illiers isvery good as O, and of course, Kinski isscary ashell. Do I really need to see Klaus Kinski naked? ’Fruits of Passion’ will be theperfect appetizer for thosewho arelooking for asoftcore film thatoffers something alittledifferent. The Anchor BayDVD of ’Fruits of Passion’offers a nicetransfer of this foreignproduction. The film ispresented in an anamorphic widescreen and is letterboxed at 1.66:1. Thepicture isverycrisp and clear, showing onlyminimaldefects inthe sourceprint. Thecolors are somewhat muted and somescenes appear dark, but this is typical of a foreign filmfrom the eighties andmost likelyhasnothing to do with aflaw in thetransfer. Thepicture shows onlysubtle grain attimes, and there is nosign of anysignificantartifacting. ’Fruits of Passion’offers a Frenchsoundtrack or andubbed Englishsoundtrack,both in Dolby Digital Mono. There are easy-to-read Englishsubtitles to go along with the Frenchsoundtrack. The only extra on theDVD is an biography of Klaus Kinski,which isdefinitely worth checking out. The biofocuses onthe fact that Kinski wasmentally unstable, andoffers many bizarre (and often violent) quotesfrom Kinski showinghisview onacting and filmmaker Warner Herzog. Scary stuff!
