Nissandoes not in any waytolerate suchmisconduct and calls forstrictpenalties," it said in astatement. Ghosn escaped Japanwhile on bail despitebeing forbidden totraveloverseas.

Although Ghosn retained one of the best lawyers in Japan, he implied inhisstatementissued on 30 December that he expectedto be foundguilty. Indeed, the Tokyo District Public Prosecutor's Office, known for (sometimesblamed for)its cautiousness,has ampleevidence to convict Ghosn. On September 2019, Ghosn agreed to pay $1 million to the US Securities and Exchange Commission tosettle claims that he concealedcompensationreceivedfrom Nissan Motors, an allegation that forms the basis ofcriminalchargesagainsthim in Japan.
