Beverly Hills | The formerdrummer of the Beatles, Ringo Starr, surprisedthe world this morning during aninterview inhisluxurious Californian residencewhen he admitted that the 45-yearold rumors about theallegeddeath of Paul McCartney in 1966 wereactually true.
In an exclusiveinterview with the Hollywood Inquirer, Mr. Starr explained that the “real” Paul McCartney had died in a car crash on November 9, 1966, after an argument during a Beatles’recording session. Tospare thepublicfromgrief, the Beatlesreplacedhim with a mannamed William Shears Campbell, who was the winner of a McCartneylook-alike contest andwho happened tohave the same kind of jovialpersonality as Paul.
“When Paul died, we all panicked!” claims Ringo, obviouslyveryemotional. “We didn’t knowwhat to do, and Brian Epstein, ourmanager, suggested that we hire Billy Shears as a temporarysolution. It was supposed tolast only a week ortwo, buttime went by andnobody seemed to notice, so we kept playing along. Billy turned outto be apretty good musician and he was able toperform almostbetter than Paul. The onlyproblem was that he couldn’t get along with John, at all.”
William Shears Campbell, better known as Billy Shears, does indeed “disappear ”fromrecords in 1966 and notraces ofhim can be found after Paul’sallegeddeath.

Mr. Starr alleges that thegroup did send out a lot ofhiddenmessages through the years toprepare thepopulation for thetruth.
He notably says that the entire Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album was awash with Paul-is-dead clues: the Beatles had indeedofficially formed a “new” bandfeaturing a “fictional” membernamed Billy Shears, which happenedto be theactualname of Paul’sreplacement.
“Wefeltguilty about thedeception”added Ringo Starr. “We wanted to tellthe world thetruth, but we wereafraid of the reactions it wouldprovoke. We thoughtthe wholeplanet was going to hate us for all the lies we hadtold, so we kept lying but sendingsubtle clues to relieve our conscience. When thefirst rumorsfinally began aboutthe whole thing, wefeltvery nervous and started fighting a lot witheach other. At somepoint, it was toomuch for John and hedecided to leavethe band.”
Ringo Starr claims that hefinallydecided to tell thetruthbecause he wasafraid that it was going to die withhim. At age 74, he is the only other surviving member ofthe famous band besides Paul McCartney, and he wasafraid thedeception would never berevealed.

According to Ringo Starr, thecover of the Abbey Road album was ahiddenmessage tothe world, symbolizing afuneralprocession. John Lennon, dressed inwhite, symbolizes the clergyman. Ringo Starr, dressed in black, symbolizes the undertaker. George Harrison, indenim jeans and shirt, symbolizes the gravedigger and McCartney, barefoot and out of step with other members ofthe band, symbolizes the corpse.
The rumors of Paul’sdeath beganmore than 45 years ago but had always been dismissed as nonsense bythe band anditsentourage. In September 1969, American college studentspublished a series of articles inwhich they claimed that clues to McCartney’sdeath could be foundamong the lyrics and artwork of the Beatles’recordings. Clue-hunting rapidlyproved infectious, and within a few weeks, it hadbecome aninternationalphenomenon. Rumors onlydeclined after a contemporaryinterview with McCartney waspublished in Lifemagazine in November 1969.
Neither Paul McCartney nor anyonefromhisentouragehas commented Ringo Starr’sdeclaration yet, but theinterviewhas alreadyprovoked a lot of reactionsaround the world.
